The concepts of domain and hosting are often confused. However, they are different things.

Website hosting is done on a dedicated server (web server or HTTP server) where the website's content is stored and made available to requesting computers through a specific communication protocol, the HTTP protocol.

This process is independent of domain names, and access to the content can be achieved by simply specifying the IP address of the web server.

Since IP addresses are difficult to remember, the domain name system allows assigning a name to that IP address, a service provided by a name server.

But the domain name resolution service is not only used for accessing websites. Its use is as vast as the countless services available on the Internet, including email, messaging, peer-to-peer, and video streaming.
